Preliminary Antibacterial Screening of the Whole Stem of Rothmannia whitfieldii

Aim: To assess the antibacterial activity of crude ethanolic and water extracts stem Rothmannia whitfieldii on clinically isolated typed pathogenic bacterial strains.
 Study Design: This experiment was performed in duplicates under aseptic condition.
 Place Duration Study: Department Microbiology, University Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria between April 2005 to August, 2005.
 Methodology: Whole dried specimen extracted by maceration screened for using agar well-diffusion technique. Five strains namely, Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 12600), Pseudomonas aeruginosa 10145), Escherichia coli 11775), Salmonella kintambo (SSRL 113) Bacillus subtilis 6051), six locally clinical (Escherichia coli, typhi, P. aeruginosa, S. two Proteus species designated as I II), were tested susceptibility plant extract.
 Results: Phytochemical analysis revealed presence flavonoids, saponnins, tannins, carbohydrates steroidal aglycone. Alkaloid present trace amount only extract. The extract exhibited a wider spectrum activity, being effective against 81.8% test organisms compared with cold-water (54.5%) or hot (27.3%). minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) varied not but also various plant.
 Conclusion: All had bacteriostatic susceptible none bactericidal. screening results authenticate folkloric claims that is medicinal gastrointestinal diseases aid wound healing.
